Text:

In 1864, a covered structure spanned the Etowah at this point.

On May 23d, the 20th Corps (F), moving from Cassville, having been ordered to cross here, was diverted through error, to Milam´s Bridge 5 mi. upstream. the 4th Corps (F), moving from Cassville, crossed here and the 14th Corps (F), moving from Kingston, crossed at Island Ford, 2 mi. west.

The three Corps camped that night near Stilesboro - a movement that was part of Sherman´s advance southward from Cassville and Kingston toward Dallas, Paulding County.
