Text:

You are now leaving the Appalachian Valley, underlain by ancient sandstones, shales, and limestones, and entering the Piedmont Plateau, underlain by much older crystalline rocks. This gently rolling plateau, 150 miles in width, represetns the bevelled-off roots of the once mighty Appalachian Mountains, from which thousands of feet of rocks have been removed by the erosian during hundreds of millions of years. Granite, gold, and marble are among the valuable minerals mined in this region.
