Text:

July 22, 1864. Walker´s div. [CSA] (Gen. Hugh Mercer, comdg.) was deployed for an attack up the valley (N.W.) on the Federal rear: Stevens´ Brigade (Col. J.C. Nisbet) on the rt.; Gist´s Brigade on the left; Mercer´s Brigade (Col. Wm. Barkuloo) in support. Bate´s div. was on the rt. E. of the Cr. It was a surprise attack -- not on the Federal rear, but on the front of Mersy´s Brigade of Sweeny´s div. with artillery, supported by one of Fuller´s brigades, all 16th A.C. troops.

Cleburne´s & Maney´s divs. [CSA] struck the Federal left flank on Flat Shoals Rd. (W. of here), & drove it northward to Leggett´s Hill.
