Text:

Commanding Artillery Battalion attached to Alexander P. Stewart´s Corps (C.S.A.) - killed in action while supervising placement of two sections of Selden´s Ala. Battery, Lt. Chas W. Lovelace, commanding, near the Embry House, July 20th, 1864, during the battle of Peachtree Creek.

This battery was in support of Reynold´s Brigade (C.S.A.) as it swept N.E. across the Embry Plantation and the road toward the re-entrant angle of the Federal Line N. of the deep ravine.

Maj. Preston, a native of S. Carolina, was the "Willie Preston" of Mary Byokins Chestnut´s, "A Diary of Dixie."
