Text:

This Gorge, 3 miles long and 600 feet deep has been cut in hard quartzite by the Tallulah River. The river once drained southwestward at this level to the Chattahoochee River and the Gulf. It was captured by the shorter, swifter Tugaloo-Savannah Rivers and now drains to the Atlantic. The falls, once at the point of capture, have worked back upstream forming the mighty gorge. The river above the falls was diverted in 1913 into a mile-long tunnel for hydro-electric power.
