Text:

This cotton press, built in the 1830's and one of the largest and last in this area, stood about 50 yards N. Exerting several thousand pounds pressure, the press, built of heavy timbers, had a wooden screw, 16 feet 3 inches long and 18 inches thick, cut from a single oak log. It was surmounted by a gabled roof that turned with the screw as it was pulled around by a mule. The sides of the bale box, five feet five inches by two feet two inches, were hinged like a gate. Used to bale cotton grown on nearby plantations before the War Between the States, this press was copied for the movie, "Gone With the Wind."
