Graves Mountain to the Southeast has long been known to mineral collectors for its excellent specimens of rutile (shiny black), lazulite (deep blue), and pyrophyllite (radiating needle like crystals.) The mountain was first described by Professor C.E. Shepard in 1859, for many years it was owned by the Dr. Geo. F. Kurts, gem expert of Tiffany & Company of New York City.
