Ellicott`s Rock, 5 miles east on the east bank of the Chattooga River, marks the northeast corner of Georgia at its junction with South Carolina and North Carolina. Andrew Ellicott, a noted surveyor of Pennsylvania, established the rock in May 1812 to mark the 35th parallel which was to the northern boundary of Georgia. Recent surveys show the rock to be 500 feet north of the true 35th parallel, which was remarkably accurate for the instruments of those days.
