Here in Rabun Gap the divide of the Blue Ridge has been cut across by stream action, forming one of the lowest passes in the Southern Appalachians. Water flows north through the Tennessee and Mississippi to the Gulf and South through the Savannah to the Atlantic. Through this gap ran an old Cherokee Indian trail; pioneer traders and settlers crossed here, later the railroad, finally this scenic highway through the mountains.
