Text:

On this square acre lot, deeded to the church by General Lewis Lawrence Griffin when he founded Griffin in 1840, was built, that same year, the first Methodist church in the area. Services have been continu ous since. In 1855, a permanent brick structure replaced the first tem porary building. Here, in 1875, Bishop Warren A. Candler was licensed to preach and returned 50 years later to preach his golden Anni versary sermon. Rev. James E. Dickey, in 1922, was elected Bishop while serving here. Among prominent members have been Judge James S. Boynton, Governor (1883), and Judge Robert T. Daniel, Grand Sire 1.0.0. F. and Great I ncononee 1.0.R.M.
