Marco Island, largest of the 10,000 Islands; realm of the Calusa Indians, a group of Paleo Indians who inhabited the island about 3,500 years ago.

Marco Island has evolved through four distinct habitations:

1. Aborigines or Calusa.
2. Spanish adventurers in search of the Fountain of Youth and gold.
3. Spaniards from Cuba, fishermen, farmers and traders who established rancheros along the Gulf Coast.
4. Setters from the Southern States who were early pioneers.
