Text:

In May, 1539, Don Hernando De Soto, Spain´s Governor of Cuba and The Floridas, sailed with 600 of his conquistadores and 220 horses from Cuba into Espiritu Santo Bay near the mouth of what is now known as the Manatee River. De Soto´s landing here heralded the beginning of the first Spanish exploration of the Southeastern United States. For two years, De Soto led his valiant band of men through the untamed wilderness of what is now Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. On May 8, 1541, they discovered the mighty Mississippi, which they called The Great River.
