Bicentennial Park 1976

Marker ID: HASF
Location: Bicentennial Park, Miami, FL
County: Miami-Dade
Waymark: None

In 1972 the Miami city commissioners passed a resolution for the development of this Bicentennial Park. 1976 also marks the 80th birthday of the city of Miami. This is the site of the original Port of Miami, where in 1898 Henry Flagler built a dock to service steamships traveling between Miami and Nassau and Key West. In 1912 the U. S. government cut a new channel between South Miami Beach and Fisher Island and across Biscayne bay. Later the channel was deepened and piers arid warehouses were added to the Port. A new port was constructed on dredged land in Biscayne Bay in the 19605.
