Collins Bridge

Marker ID: HASF
Location: East end of Venetjan Causeway, Miami Beach.
County: Miami-Dade
Waymark: None

The first bridge to Miami Beach was formally opened on June 12, 1913, enabling real estate development of the offshore peninsula. The ambitious bridge project was pursued by John S. Collins, then 75 years old, who wanted to connect his beach holdings with the mainland. 2100 wood pilings stretched 2 1/2 miles and supported a 24 foot wide plank roadway. It was called the longest wooden vehicular bridge on earth. Thirteen years later it had been sold and replaced by the Venetian Islands and Causeway.
