On December 1, 1965, planes began bringing refugees to the U.S. from Cuba, fulfilling President Lyndon B. Johnson´s promise that "those who seek refuge here in America will find it." Old Army barracks near Miami International Airport were converted into "La Casa de la Ubertad" (Freedom House), where over 260,000 refugees were processed prior to joining relatives in Miami or resettling in other cities. The last of 3,048 Freedom Flights arrived in Miami on April 6, 1973.
