From this airport, the first regularly scheduled mail flight from North America to South America took off June 17, 1929, just 25 years and six months after the Wright Brothers´ first successful powered flight.

The Pan American World Airways S~38 amphibian clipper made overnight stops at Belize, Managua and Cristobal, arriving at Cartagena, Columbia, June 21, then proceeding to Barranquilla and Curacao.

The first scheduled passenger flight to South America left this field December 20, 1929,
and terminated December 24 at Curacao.
