On Dec. 12, 1780, an old tradition says, British Major Robert McLeroth was surprised near here by Francis Marion, but avoided all-out battle by slipping away after pretending to agree to a staged combat, twenty on each side. Credence is given to the tale by the well-documented skirmish next day between forces at Singleton´s Mill, 10 miles north.
