Captured near here by the British in July 1781 while commanding a party of militia, Col. Hayne was taken to Charleston, imprisoned in the Exchange Building, and hanged by his conquerors as a traitor on August 4, 1781, having previously laid down his arms to be with his family who were ill with the smallpox. By his death he became a martyr for liberty.
