The military began this post, also known as Camp Styx, in 1913 as a National Guard training center. The post sent men to a Mexican border disturbance after Pres. Woodrow Wilson mobilized the guard in 1916, and its 1 st Infantry Regiment, later the 118th, played a significant role in World War I, breaking the purportedly impregnable Hindenburg line of defense. The camp closed in the early 1920s.
