This street was originally named Gates for Gen. Horatio Gates. Commander of the victorious Northern Army at Saratoga in 1777 and then of the Southern Army, Gates suffered disastrous defeat at Camden in 1780. Replaced by Gen. Nathanael Greene, Gates retired to Virginia. He died, 1806, in New York. This street - known for years as Park Street, adjacent to Sydney, later Seaboard Park - was officially listed as Park in 1941 records.
