Lawrence County
Established 1817; named in honor of

Captain James Lawrence.

Served under Stephen Decatur; in War of 1812 he commanded the Chesapeake in her fight with the frigate, Shannon. Mortally wounded, he gave the famous command:
"Don't give up the Ship."

Giles County
Established 1809; named in honor of

Senator William B. Giles

of Virginia. One of the strongest advocates for the admission of Tennessee to the Union; he served in the U.S. Senate from 1804 to 1815 and was Governor of Virginia, 1827-30.
