Killed By a Loose Bolt

On the evening of February 13, 1862 the U.S. Gunboat Carondelet fired a few shots at this lower water battery. One Carondelet projectile hit the side of a Confederate gun-carriage at this location. A large "screw bolt" went flying. The loose screw struck the battery's highly respected commander, Captain Joseph Dixon, in the forehead. Dixon died instantly, the only Confederate casualty in the shelling.
